Passion Learner

Weekend, short-form, and observation heritage craft experiences

For committed hobbyists, at any age. CraftGate hosts weekend residentials, dedicated teaching days, and observation half-days - always run separately from our pre-apprenticeship cohorts.

Four delivery formats

Weekend residential

Dedicated teaching day

Observation half-day

Who this is for

Committed hobbyists

You've made things with your hands before and want to try something more serious - taught properly, on real materials, by someone who earns their living from the craft.

Mid-career or retired

A weekend that brings you closer to how a building was made or how a material behaves. Short-form, no career implications, no commitment beyond the dates you book.

Curious first-timers

No prior experience needed for most formats. An observation half-day is the gentlest way in - watch, ask, leave with your own judgement about whether hands-on is next.

Researchers & writers

If you're documenting heritage crafts or writing about them, a structured observation day gives you direct access without interrupting the work.

What this isn't: a route into the trade. The passion-learner pathway is deliberately separate from our 16–25 pre-apprenticeship and career-changer programmes. If you're looking to change career, start here instead.

What to expect

Small groups

Typically 4–8 participants. Enough for good group dynamics, few enough that the host can actually teach you.

Real materials, real projects

Not simulations. You work with the same lime, stone, timber, reed, metal or pigment the host uses on paid work.

A working practitioner

Every experience is delivered by someone who earns their living from the craft. No paid instructors teaching a syllabus they don’t practise.

Structured, not rigid

A clear learning intention for the day or weekend, with room for questions and where the group’s curiosity takes it.

Take something away

Most hands-on formats send you home with what you made - a worked sample, a small object, or a documented skill you can practise.

No hidden costs

The price you see covers teaching, materials, and PPE. Travel, accommodation and food are on you unless otherwise stated.

Common questions

Do I need prior experience?›
Not for observation half-days or most weekend residentials. Dedicated teaching days occasionally specify a minimum - where that applies, the experience description will say so.
Is there an age restriction?›
Adults only (18+) for hands-on formats. Under-18s participating in any heritage craft activity on CraftGate go through our pre-apprenticeship pathway, not the passion-learner route - the safeguarding framework is different.
Can I bring a friend?›
Yes. Book separately through the same experience and let the host know you’d like to be placed together. We don’t discount for pairs.
What if an experience is cancelled?›
Full refund, no quibble. We’ll also flag alternatives in the same craft if any are scheduled nearby.
Can I suggest a craft or a date?›
Yes - email office@craftgate.org. If enough interest accumulates for a craft that isn’t yet listed, we’ll approach the relevant host about scheduling something.
I’m a heritage craftsperson - can I host experiences?›
Yes. Sign up via the host pathway and add passion-learner experiences alongside (or instead of) placements. See /for-hosts for the full commercial model.
